How to submit your website

Obviously there are more search engines in the world than Google, but

  • More people in the USA and Europe use Google than any other search engine.
  • In Asia, Yahoo is the most popular search engine.
  • Google provide comprehensive toolkits to assist with positioning web pages.
  • If you can get your website optimised for Google, it usually does well on MSN (aka Windows Live) and Yahoo.

In order to get as much exposure as possible, you should submit your website to as many search engines as you can.

Google, Yahoo and MSN

You can simply submit your website's home page address to most search engines by filling in a simple form. For example, for this website, you would enter http://www.gembiz.co.uk and you are also usually asked to enter a code displayed on the form to prevent automatic submissions.

To submit to Yahoo (requires a registration), click here

Other search engines

Unfortunately, not all seach engines are as easy to submit youe website to as Google and MSN. Ask (formerly Ask Jeeves) has a rather complicated method of registering where you need to create a site map and then create special directive files in your website. Not nice.

Lycos has a directory structure. You can start from this page and select the classification you wish to be placed under. Then you click the "Add your site" hidden very unobstrusively in the bottom left corner of the central panel.
